Shark Cage Diving in South Africa is a world-renowned adrenaline experience, particularly famous for great white shark encounters. Here’s what you need to know:
Top Locations:
Gansbaai: Often called the “Great White Shark Capital of the World,” Gansbaai is the most popular spot, located about two hours from Cape Town.
Mossel Bay: Offers a more relaxed shark diving experience with consistent sightings.
False Bay: Known for dramatic “airjaws” breaching where great whites hunt seals.
Best Time to Go:
Peak Season: May to September, when visibility is clearer and shark activity is highest.
Off-Peak: April to October still offers sightings but can be less predictable.
What to Expect: Boat Trip: After a safety briefing, you’ll head out to sea where sharks are attracted using bait and chum (without feeding them).
Cage Diving: A secure steel cage is lowered into the water, and you enter with a mask and wetsuit, holding your breath as sharks swim nearby.
